| Clothes for Cloth Diapered Kids |
What
is the difference between Cloth & Disposable Kiddos?
Size
mostly. Disposables are really thin. Although there are cloth diapers that are as
thin
as disposables, they tend to be pricier and don't always work for heavy
wetters. (of course, disposables didn't work for Zane either.
He peed
right through everything from generic to pampers and huggies before I discovered cloth.
Really
bulky cloth is the ONLY thing that would work for nighttime diapering
until he started staying dry at night)
Really slender kids probably won't have any problems with gettting any
clothes over their diapers. With some kids, the diapers is the
only thing holding their pants on, so if your kids are very slender,
you can ignore most of this advice.
The
extra bulk that many cloth diapers have means that it can be more of a
challenge to get a decent fit, especially if you have a heavy wetter
that requires more layers. The rise in modern clothes has
been
shortened to cater to the thinner rise of the sposies, which means that
pants can ride too low and onesies might fall off the shoulders to get
the torso length you need.
One of the best solutions in cool
weather is to forgo a traditional cover, and instead opt for knitted
longies (wool soakers knitted into pants), wool jersey or interlock
pants, or (100% polyester, not cotton) fleece pants. All of
these act
as covers and simplifies dressing. For summer, either having
the same
type of pants cut to shorts, or just diaper covers (especially some of
the fancier ones) without worrying about pants over it.
Around here, I
did need to find actual pants once my son was past the toddler stage
because it wasn't socially appropriate to have him running around in
just a diaper any more.
One solution is to just keep buying up a
size or two on pants, but that can look goofy, especially on
short-legged kids. Some things fit better than others, and
here is my
basic run-down of what I have found works better, or have heard from
others that works really well for them. (if you know of
another brand
or company that I missed, please tell me so I can add it)
Basic advice
- 2-piece
outfits work better most of the time, unless you have a child with a
very short torso. Kimono shirts, baby t-shirts, and sacks are
good
staples for the newborn stage. Unless the baby kicks off
blankets in
cool temperatures, a shirt and diaper only can be an easy
around-the-house dressing solution. (especially if you are
wearing the
baby since you will be sharing your body heat with them)
- If
you really like onesies, you can get extenders to increase the length
at the crotch. Also, I have heard the Gerber brand are better
than
most at accommodating cloth.
Major
Retailers
This is mainly for 100% polyester fleece pants (and other pants with more room in the butt)
Old
Navy
& The
Gap
- the same company, Old Navy is more moderately priced.
Good & Bad, depending on the pants. The pants I prefer
are "Old Navy Performance Fleece" pants
they have
had out the last few seasons. They usually don't stock them until cool
weather hits. (Gap has had their version too, also good)
The fleece can be worn in place of a cover for
easy
dressing in cooler months. Adjustable waist in many of the pants
are good, might might not be workable on short legged or normal legged
babies. Probably need to buy a size up (especially for girls,
they make hip huggers for the diaper set) and try to stick with the
stretchier materials. Old Navy is not as roomy as the Gap,
neither of them is great for denim or other woven materials. Boys
stuff looser fit than girls.
Hanna Anderson
- Their wiggle
pants & Long Johns are especially well known for having more room
in the trunk. Very high quality clothing in general. If I
had the money, this would be the majority of my kid's wardrobe.
Others I have heard good things about:
Basic Brilliance - pants
Blue Canoe - pants
Children's Place
- heard they had fleece similar to Old Navy last season. leggings and
stockings have good stretch, don't even have to size up on them for some kids.
Cotton Caboodle - pants & leggings
Gymboree - pants & leggings
Land's End - in general, good place for pants and other kid's clothes
LL Bean - also has a nice fleece pant in their winter stuff. Heard good things about their kids clothes in general.
Zutano - haven't seen their clothes myself, but hear them recommended by other CDing parents
WAHMs & Small Businesses
There
are a ton of WAHMs that make clothes for diapered kids. This
is where
you find the longies, soakers, wool interlock, wool jersey and custom
diaper sets. Here are a few that I have heard good things
about or
dealt with personally.

Beaner Boy - custom fleece for cloth diaper
Creations Boutique - wool knitted,
wool interlock & wool jersey pants, dress & diaper
sets, diapers & more

auctions off custom slots and keeps an instock store as she can.
Very high quality work. Has all length soakers from
diaper
cover to longies.
Little Turtle Knits
owner Theresa also knits soakers and longies. (I think she
actually
coined the term 'longies' if I remember right). She also has LTK licensed sellers.
Lucy's Hope Chest
- I have been hearing great things about her for several years now.
The AIOs are supposed to be great. She specializes
in clothing for
preemies and works with special needs moms to make custom clothing as
well as a good selection of in-stock clothing.
Naturekins - CD clothes and related items at hyena cart.
Peenut Pants - much raved about wool pants and soakers. Does custom work too.
